Orangutan Controllers

Introduction

Pololu’s Orangutan robot controllers are combinations of microcontrollers and additional hardware useful for controlling robots. All Orangutans feature Atmel AVR microcontrollers, multiple H-bridges for direct control of DC motors, and most units have integrated LCD displays. All units except the Orangutan X2 require external programmers such as Atmel’s AVRISP or the Pololu Orangutan USB programmer (see 3805-040 below). We also stock Pololu's range of motor speed controllers for where you do not require the programmability of the Orangutan.

The Orangutan family currently has four members:

* Orangutan is the original Pololu robot controller based on a mega8/168 microcontrollers and LB1836M dual motor driver that can deliver up to 1 A peak. The operating voltage is 5-10 V.

* Baby Orangutan packs the same basic hardware as the original Orangutan into a familiar 24-pin DIP-size package. This is the only Orangutan product without explicit LCD support, but an LCD can be connected externally. The Baby Orangutan is available with a mega48 or a mega168 microcontroller.

* Orangutan X2 is by far the most powerful Orangutan, and it is intended for small and medium-sized robots. The design features a dual-AVR architecture that leaves a mega644 microcontroller almost completely available to the user while taking care of low-level motor control tasks on the pre-programmed mega168, which also doubles as a programmer for the master processor. A stacked motor driver PCB allows the compact integration of beefy motor drivers that can deliver hundreds of watts. The Orangutan X2 is available with the VNH2SP30 or VNH3SP30 motor drivers and with or without a 4-line x 20-character LCD.

* Orangutan LV-168 is similar to the original Orangutan but redesigned for low-voltage (2.5-5.5 V) operation. A step-up regulator provides 5 V to the microcontroller (and your sensors) while a pair of discrete, low-voltage H-bridges replace the original LB1836M motor driver to deliver up to 2 A continuous to get the most power out of low-voltage motors.

Orangutan Robot Controller Mega 8 - Part No: 3805-010
The Orangutan robot controller is a complete control solution for small robots. Orangutan includes an 8-character x 2-line liquid crystal display, two bi-directional motor ports, a buzzer, three pushbuttons, and up to 12 user I/O lines, yet the compact module measures only 50.8 x 47mm and weighs less than 28g. Because of the complete feature set, very few additional components (such as sensors or motors) need to be added to complete the electronic portion of a small robot. The small package allows for greater flexibility in incorporating the electronics into the mechanical design of a robot.

Orangutan Robot Controller Mega 168 - Part No: 3805-011
Want to build a small robot that doesn’t look like a PCB on wheels? The Orangutan is small enough for integrating into a small robot, rather than being the small robot. With a powerful Atmel mega168 AVR microcontroller, motor drivers, buttons, display, and buzzer, all you need to add is your own chassis, sensors, software,... you know, the fun stuff!

Baby Orangutan Mega 48 - Part No: 3805-001
The Baby Orangutan is a complete control solution for small robots that is even smaller than the original 3805-010 robot controller. By removing the bulkier components such as the LCD and switches, Pololu engineers have shrunk the most essential features into a 30.5 x 17.75mm dual in-line pin (DIP) package. Unlike similarly-sized microcontroller boards from other manufacturers, the Baby Orangutan features two independent motor drivers for direct control of two DC motors. Two on-board indicator LEDs and a trimmer potentiometer round out the basic hardware features of the Baby Orangutan.

Pololu’s Orangutan X2 is by far the most powerful Orangutan. The design features a dual-AVR architecture that leaves an Atmel ATmega644 AVR microcontroller almost completely available to the user while taking care of low-level motor control tasks on the pre-programmed mega168. The Orangutan X2 version from Technobots has the VNH2SP30 motor driver and can be supplied with (3805-021) or without (3805-020) a 4-line x 20-character LCD.

The Orangutan X2 is the third release in Pololu’s line of Orangutan robot controllers. Like the original Orangutan and subsequent Baby Orangutan, the Orangutan X2 is designed to be a compact, high-performance control center for robotics and automation projects. The Orangutan X2’s two-board design allows the unit to maintain the compactness characteristic of the Orangutan line while offering substantially more electrical and computational power: the X2 can deliver up to a horsepower across two motor channels, and the twin-microcontroller architecture allows maximum access to the primary microcontroller, an Atmel ATmega644 AVR running at 20MHz with 64KB of program memory and 4KB of SRAM. It has an outline smaller than a credit card, which makes it small enough to fit in a mini-sumo or small maze solver, yet it is powerful enough to run a 1/10th scale monster truck. A battery, motors, and sensors can be connected directly to the module for quick creation of advanced robots.

Orangutan LV-168 Robot Controller - Part No: 3805-030
The Orangutan LV-168 is a full-featured controller for low-voltage robots. Thanks to a step-up voltage regulator, you can power this Orangutan with two or three 1.2-1.5 V batteries while maintaining 5 V operation for its Atmel mega168 AVR microcontroller and your sensors. A pair of discrete, low-voltage H-bridges deliver up to 2 A continuous to get the most power out of low-voltage motors.

The Orangutan LV-168 robot controller, the fourth release in our line of Orangutan robot controllers, is a complete control solution for small robots powered by two or three NiMH cells (or similar batteries). The small (55mm x 48mm) module includes a powerful Atmel ATmega168 AVR microcontroller, two bidirectional motor ports each capable of providing 2 A (continuous), a removable 8-character x 2-line liquid crystal display, a buzzer, three user pushbutton switches, and two user LEDs. Eight general-purpose I/O lines with up to eight analog input channels allow for adding sensors or expanding the system.

Orangutan USB Programmer - Part No: 3805-040
This programmer is a compact solution for programming our Orangutan, Orangutan LV-168, and Baby Orangutan robot controllers through a USB port. Our programmer incorporates a USB-to-serial adapter and emulates an AVR ISP programmer so that you can program your Orangutans with any software that can talk through a serial port to an AVR ISP, such as Atmel’s AVR Studio and AVRDUDE, which is included in the open-source WinAVR package. The unit also doubles as a USB-to-serial adapter (TX and RX only), allowing you to communicate with your Orangutan, or any other microcontroller, through a terminal program.

A USB A to Mini-B cable is required but not included (see 3804-016). These types of cables are common for digital cameras and other USB peripherals, so you might already have the necessary cable. The 6-pin ISP programming cable (pictured to the right) is included. The older, 10-pin ISP connections are not directly supported.
