Introduction

A range of Tamiya Geared motors supplied as a kit, assembly is required. To use with for example a robotics project, you will need other items such as wheels, motor controller etc. See here for our range of Tamiya wheels.

Tamiya 72101 Gearhead Motor Drive System - Part No: 1452-020
The Tamiya 72102 gear head motor and pin spike tire set is part of Tamiya's new line of products designed specifically for robots. The 380-size motors are substantially larger than the 130- and 260-size motors found in the smaller Tamiya gearbox kits, making this drive set capable of moving medium-sized robots weighing up to approximately 5kg. The set consists of two motors with gearboxes, two aluminum mounting brackets, two hubs, and two wheels, along with assorted mounting hardware.

The larger motors in the 72102 set require a more powerful motor driver capable of driving in excess of 10 amps (the stall current is about 12 A at 7.2 V). The Pololu dual high-current motor drivers are a good match for these motors; we recommend the VNH2SP30 version due to its higher performance and current sensing option. Please note that although the 380 motors look like the 540 motors typically used in 1/10-scale radio control models, the 380 motors are substantially smaller than the 540 motors. For RC models, we have achoice of suitable speed controllers from manufacturers such as Electronize.

Note: The Tamiya 72102 gear head motor and pin spike tire set is a kit; assembly is required. You will need to provide your own electronics (motor driver) and all other mechanical components to build a robot.

The Tamiya 70168 double gearbox is a compact unit with two independent motors and gear trains. The possible gear ratio configurations are 12.7:1, 38:1, 115:1, and 344:1. Although it is not typical, it is possible to assemble each side with different gear ratios. There are two possible output axle locations, which are illustrated on the packaging (for any given gear ratio, only one output location is possible).

Tamiya 70167 Single Gearbox 4-Speed - Part No: 1452-002

Tamiya 70097 Twin-Motor Gearbox - Part No: 1452-003
The Tamiya 70097 twin-motor gearbox is a small 76mm plastic gearbox. It contains two small DC motors that drive separate 3mm hexagonal output shafts. There are two ways to put the kit together: with a high-speed 58:1 gear ratio or with a slower 203:1 gear ratio. Either way, the motors provide plenty of power to drive any small robot.

Tamiya 70110 4-Speed Crank Axle Gearbox - Part No: 1452-005

Tamiya 70103 Universal Gearbox - Part No: 1452-006
Unlike the other gearboxes in Tamiya's series, the universal gearbox has a thin metal frame, making it the smallest Tamiya gearbox. The final two gears are metal, making for a tough output. A worm gear allows for the high gear ratio options of 101:1, 269:1, and 719:1. The main output shaft can be oriented in four different directions, and a small, auxiliary output shaft turns perpendicularly to the main output shaft.

Tamiya 72001 Planetary Gearbox - Part No: 1452-007
The first in Tamiya's "high efficiency" series, the planetary gearbox features two 4:1 and two 5:1 stages that can be combined in any way you like--you can even combine two kits to get really huge gear ratios.
